Rovinj was originally built on an island and until 1763 linked to the mainland. In the 7th century the town was a fortress, so be sure to visit the three remaining city gates, the entrance to the old city of Balbi Arch and the 60 metre high tower of St. Euphemia Church. The tower is dominated by the statue of St. Euphemia, which rotates, indicating to sailors with her hand the direction of the wind. The church was built in the early 17th century and is the most important monument of Rovinj. As it was once governed by Venice, it is referred to as “Venice’s little brother,” and evidence of its influence remains. From the church there is a wonderful view over the rooftops of the city, the sailing ships and the sea in front of Istria.
