8,750 kilometres of coastline, 5 national parks, 12 amusement parks, 7 UNESCO sites, and 79 castles: how does that sound for an action-packed getaway?
We might be a little biased (half of the NOVASOL team are based in Denmark!) but more than 53 million travellers can’t be wrong - Denmark is an incredible holiday destination. In fact, with 27.6 million overnight stays each year, Denmark is the largest tourist destination in the Nordic region, with 10 million more than our Swedish neighbour.

Delightful destinations in Denmark
From white sandy beaches and dramatic natural experiences to idyllic small towns and exciting adventures, every part of Denmark offers its own unique charm. Deciding where to visit is the hardest part of planning the trip, but here's where has captured the hearts of our local Danish teammates.
The Danish North Sea
If you’re holidaying in Denmark, it’s hard to miss the beautiful North Sea, and rightly so. It’s a popular summer destination for both tourists and Danes alike.
The nature here is stunning and easily accessible. You can listen to the waves and enjoy the sweeping views of the blue sea.
There are also loads of brilliant family-friendly activities: visit Thy National Park, the wandering dunes of Råbjerg Mile, the Wadden Sea National Park, Cold Hawaii in Klitmøller, or explore exciting towns like Esbjerg, Ringkøbing, and Blåvand.
Skagen
Denmark's northernmost tip, Skagen, has culture, museums, the North Sea and the Kattegat, plus you can explore fascinating sights like the Buried Church, the tipping beacon (Vippefyret), Grenen, and the historic home of artist P.S. Krøyer, which is now a museum.
There’s something for everyone in Skagen. Adults can relax with a wellness session or visit a museum, while children will love the Teddy Bear Museum or a trip to the water park.
Long beach walks or exploring Skagen’s nightlife are also wonderful ways to enjoy your stay. Dreaming of a holiday in Denmark filled with culture, adventure and great food? Head to Skagen!

Bornholm
Known as the island of contrasts, the rocky island, or the sunshine island, Bornholm has many names, and rightfully earns a place on this list.
You can visit the ruins of Hammershus castle, walk through Almindingen forest, or swim at Denmark’s finest sandy beach in Dueodde.
Even Danes themselves love holidaying here. It’s easy to enjoy great experiences on Bornholm: every town is idyllic, full of charm, sights, and culinary delights. The island is also easy to reach, making it a flexible choice.

Djursland
Planning a family holiday in Denmark? Djursland is a brilliant choice, packed with activities and fun.
Here you’ll find the large amusement park Djurs Sommerland, offering excitement for the whole family. You can also visit Mols Bjerge National Park, perfect for long walks or a bit of mountain biking.
Dine at the renowned Molskroen restaurant, visit the historic Frigate Jylland in Ebeltoft, or enjoy a day at Ree Safari Park, where animals of the savannah await.

Unusual things to do in Denmark
A Danish holiday is much more than just beaches and sea. We’ve gathered a few unusual attractions and ideas for days out you might not yet have considered.
Black Sun (Sort Sol)
Black Sun is a natural phenomenon where massive flocks of starlings gather before migrating south for winter. The sky becomes literally black with birds, hence the name. In some years, over a million birds have been spotted.
You can witness Black Sun in various parts of Denmark from August and sometimes as late as December, making it a perfect autumn holiday activity. The best spots include Rømø, Tipperne, and around Tønder.
Seal Safari
Seal populations have grown in Danish waters, and you can now often spot these adorable animals sunbathing on beaches or sandbanks.
It’s now possible to go on seal safaris in several locations. On Fanø and Rømø, you can see them on foot or by boat. They’re also spotted around the Limfjord and Falster.
Stevns Klint
The Cliffs of Stevns is one of seven Danish UNESCO World Heritage Sites and a must-visit for any traveller.
Admire the dramatic chalk cliff from above or by boat, explore the old Højerup Church, or walk the trail to the Stevns Lighthouse, where you can see all the way to Sweden and Møns Klint on a clear day.
Mønsted Limestone Mine
Take the whole family to the world’s largest limestone mine. You can explore some of its 60 kilometres of underground tunnels, many of which are lit.
Over 18,000 protected bats live in the mine, which you can observe up close. Mønsted is also known for its “mine cheese”, matured in the caves and available for tasting.
Don’t miss the mine train ride, which takes you through the grounds and up to the entrance. Above ground, you’ll find a museum and the old lime kiln. It’s fun for the whole family!

Den Gamle By in Aarhus
Travel back in time at this open-air museum in Aarhus. Explore a town from Hans Christian Andersen’s era, the 1920s, and the welfare society of the 1960s and ’70s.
Den Gamle By features three districts (1864, 1927, 1974) brought to life with period activities. There are also various museums, including the Craft Museum and the Danish Poster Museum. Christmas is particularly special here, with a magical festive atmosphere.
The World Map in Klejtrup
In the small town of Klejtrup near Hobro in East Jutland, you can visit a miniature version of the world with the whole family.
This massive 45x90 metre map uses stones and water to depict continents, oceans, and mountains.
Located beside Lake Klejtrup, the park also features animals, a maze, mini-golf, and rowing boats—perfect for a fun day out with children.
Thy National Park
Denmark’s first national park, Thy, in North Jutland, offers incredible natural experiences. Watch the waves crash against vast dunes from the wild North Sea.
Enjoy hiking or cycling through diverse landscapes and spot wildlife. If you’re quiet, you might even catch sight of a red deer.
Thy National Park is perfect for a peaceful family retreat in Northern Jutland.

Best places for family travel in Denmark
In summer, most holiday home regions offer a wide range of family activities, making a holiday home stay ideal.
If you're travelling outside peak season, choose a larger holiday area or one close to a city for year-round attractions and experiences.
For beach holidays with children, East Jutland, Funen and North Zealand are best known for safe, family-friendly beaches.
From Djursland, you’re also close to top attractions like LEGOLAND, Givskud ZOO, and Djurs Sommerland, all offering fun for young and old alike.
Likewise, in North Denmark, you’ll find Fårup Sommerland, a brilliant amusement park with a large waterpark.

Your Danish adventure awaits!
Whether you’re into natural beauty, rich cultural heritage or cosy town life, Denmark has something for everyone. From the magical light of Skagen to the rolling landscapes of Funen and the vibrant streets of Copenhagen, countless unforgettable moments await.
