Buje was inhabited very early due to its highly strategic location. Researchers have found that the first existence of life in the area dates back to the Palaeolithic Era. The Histri then constructed a selection of prehistoric hill-forts before the Romans, later established colonies in the area. As you may discover during a self-catering Croatia holiday, the town was incredibly secure and remnants of the old city walls and medieval towers can still be admired today. Be sure to visit the Ethnological Museum and discover artefacts including tools, furniture and favoured items of an old-fashioned Istrian household.
The area of Buje is home to one of the most famous wine roads in Croatia, with over 23 famous wine makers. The area’s fertile soils and Mediterranean climate also ensures that Buje is home to one of the finest olive oils in the world. You may want to purchase a bottle to enjoy in the comfort of your Istrian villa. Such fine wines and delectable oils are best enjoyed with the region’s other locally grown produce, including honey, prosciutto, cheese, wild asparagus, truffles and fresh, fragrant vegetables. It’s no surprise that our guests return to their favourite villa in Croatia time and time again!
If you can tear yourself away from sampling the region’s delicious cuisine in the comfort of your Croatian villa, be sure to explore Buje itself. Head to the town square and admire the impressive facades of the nearby houses. Or discover the Church of Saint Servulus and climb the wooden steps of the adjacent bell tower. From here you can admire views of Slovenia, Italy, Austria and Croatia. Ensure that you take some binoculars as on a clear day you can see Venice, or perhaps your very own villa!
Alternatively, fans of walking may wish to enjoy a hike through the vineyards, olive groves and dense oak forests. There is so much to see, and walking through the agricultural land, seeing local people go about their day provides an evocative understanding of Istrian culture and tradition – a perfect way to expand your knowledge whilst you are self-catering Croatia! Families may also wish to try activities such as cycling, horse riding or caving – whether you are seeking an active adventure or a relaxing retreat in one of NOVASOL’s villas in Istria, Buje has it all!
