Cloudless skies, dreamy bays, endless beaches and shimmering blue waters. When you picture a holiday in Croatia, it’s often the coastline that steals the spotlight. But the country’s rich culture, welcoming cities and vibrant spirit are just as rewarding to explore.

While its old town has nearly 1,000 years of history, the city buzzes with youthful energy, modern attractions and a laid-back café culture. It's home to grand architecture, green parks, bustling markets and a thriving arts scene.
With about 800,000 residents, Zagreb is compact enough to explore on foot, yet packed with things to see and do, making it an ideal city break destination.

The 10 most beautiful sights in Zagreb
Zagreb may be compact, but it’s packed with character, and its top attractions are a great way to experience the city’s mix of history, culture and everyday charm. From Gothic cathedrals and colourful rooftops to lively markets, panoramic viewpoints and peaceful green spaces, the Croatian capital offers something for every kind of traveller.
Here are ten unmissable sights that capture the spirit of Zagreb and make exploring the city on foot or by tram a real pleasure.
1. Best for first-time visitors looking to get their bearings: Ban Jelačić Square
The city’s main meeting point and beating heart, Ban Jelačić Square is where locals and visitors alike gather. With its impressive statue of Josip Jelačić and tram lines radiating in all directions, it’s the perfect launchpad for sightseeing. This spot is central, lively, great for people-watching, though be aware that at peak times it can be busy and noisy - the square is accessible from all major tram routes and it’s no secret what a great place this is!
2. Best for foodies craving local flavours and a lively, authentic shopping scene: Dolac Market
Just steps from Ban Jelačić Square, this open-air market buzzes with life. Look out for its red parasols and stock up on local produce, cheese and cured meats. The market mostly takes cash only so come prepared and avoid afternoons and Sundays when the market is closed, plus early morning is when the best produce is available and the atmosphere its most lively! Read more about traditional Croatian food you might get to sample during your trip!
3. Best for urban explorers and history buffs who like a twist of the unexpected: Grič Tunnel
This 350-metre tunnel connects Mesnička and Radićeva streets. Built during WWII as a bomb shelter, it’s now a quirky urban walkway and the perfect cool escape during a hot summer!. Best explored in the morning before it gets busy and unfortunately it is inaccessible for those with mobility issues. The central location makes it a convenient place to visit, entry is free and you won’t find something more quirky to explore in Zagreb!
4. Best for culture seekers wanting an elegant night out: Croatian National Theatre
A true showstopper with its yellow façade and gorgeous architecture including domed towers. Inside you’ll find a rich programme of drama, music and dance, with ticket prices ranging from €5 to €25. Don’t miss out on the guided tour for the full story!
5. Best for: Travellers short on time who still want a unique view: Zagreb Funicular
Running just 66 metres, this is one of the shortest funiculars in the world but it’s a charming, cheap (tickets are around 60 cents!) and scenic way to reach the upper town.
6. Best for: View chasers and thrill seekers Lotrščak Tower
Next to the funicular, this tower offers sweeping city views. Don’t be startled by the daily midday cannon blast, it’s a long-standing tradition but bring ear defenders if you are sensitive to loud noises. There is a small entry fee of €2 but the biggest cost is the steep steps to the top! The satisfaction of reaching the top is well worth it though!
7. Best for architecture lovers and photographers: Zagreb Cathedral
Visible from across the city, the cathedral’s twin 100-metre spires dominate the skyline. Its mix of architectural styles reflects its long and dramatic history, and it remains one of Zagreb’s most photographed landmarks. There is no entry fee and the cathedral is central to the city, so is easy to find. Many hours of work go into protecting the cathedral for the future and there may still be renovation works going on when you visit but this certainly doesn’t take away from the experience!
8. Best for instagrammers and design fans: St. Mark’s Church
Famous for its tiled roof showing the coats of arms of Croatia and Zagreb, this colourful 13th-century church is a symbol of the capital. Be mindful that this is a working church and that the interior spaces are only accessible during mass.
9. Best for peaceful wanderers and fans of atmospheric, historical space: Mirogoj Cemetery
A peaceful and beautifully landscaped cemetery, known for its arcades, domes and historic graves, it is often listed among Europe’s most beautiful. The cemetery is around a ten minute drive from the city centre but there are buses on this route.
10. Best for art-lovers and aesthetes: Art Pavilion
Opposite King Tomislav Square, this glowing yellow building hosts rotating art exhibitions and remains one of Zagreb’s most iconic cultural landmarks. There is an entry fee of around €3–€5 and make sure to look online for any upcoming exhibitions that might take your fancy!
Great day trips from Zagreb

Just outside the city, this forested mountain area is perfect for hiking or mountain biking. It has well-marked trails and even a cable car available to take the weight of your feet for just €4 each way! Reach the 1,032m summit of Sljeme, and make sure to dress for the weather and be careful on the steep and uneven areas.
Best for urban adventurers interested in Croatia’s contemporary culture and coastal character: Rijeka
Croatia’s third-largest city and an easy day trip from Zagreb. Explore its historic centre, waterfront promenade and vibrant cultural life. There are regular trains from Zagreb to Rijeka which take around 2 hours. Famous for its stunning waterfalls, Krka is a lush haven of walking trails, ancient ruins and photogenic cascades. Ideal for nature lovers. This day out requires a bit more of a journey, its around 3 hours from Zagreb, and the entry fee is around €20 - €40 depending on the time fo year you visit. There are boat rides to be enjoyed when you get there, plus preserved watermills from years gone by.
Best for romantic day-trippers and history fans: Trakošćan Castle
One of Croatia’s most picturesque castles, surrounded by forest and a lake. Just an hour from Zagreb, it offers historic interiors and peaceful parklands. Unfortunately, public transport options are limited, but there are regular guided tours available from Zagreb. The €6 entry fee is well worth it for a glimpse into Medieval Croatia! The grounds are open year-round so as long as you dress for the weather, it would make a delightfully charming winter date!
