Holiday rentals in Norway - Oslofjord

The Oslofjord region consists of the counties Østfold, Vestfold, Oslo and Akershus. The area is characterised by the highest population density in Norway of approximately 1.7 million. Coastal cottages are perfect for swimming and sunbathing, and there are many cultural attractions and beautiful monuments. On the mainland you will find agricultural areas and dense forests. Norway is perfect for ski holidays, and winter sports. However, there are lots of wide open spaces outside the capital of Oslo to explore the rest of the year, making self-catering in Norway a year-round option. Remote villages of wooden houses nestled deep in the mountains are great places to try fishing, sailing, water-skiing, trekking, and visiting remote farmsteads.

City and countryside

Urban excitement can also be found in cosmopolitan trendy Oslo on your self-catering Norway holidays. First-rate museums, cultural attractions, bars and restaurants are in full swing here the year round. The city of Bergen is quite distinct from Oslo with its brightly-coloured waterfront houses. See Stavanger which presides over fjords, mountains and sandy beaches. You may like a holiday home that does both - rent a country cottage in Askerhus, for example, and enjoy the benefits of the peaceful fjords, whilst also being able to explore the cultural hotspots on offer in Oslo and Bergen.

Art and culture in Oslo

The towns along the fjord are wonderful tourist destinations and full of some of the best things to do in Norway. If you go to the Oslofjord, we recommend that you go on a one-day trip to the city. NOVASOL offers a large selection of Norwegian holiday cottages in the area surrounding Oslo, the Norwegian capital. Here you find many interesting sights and attractions, e.g. the Viking Ship Museum on Bygdøy, the Vigeland Sculpture Park and the museum of Edvard Munch, who was a forerunner of expressionistic art. Oslo is the “green capital” of Europe. You will find out why, if you take the tram from Frognesteren to Nordmark or a boat from Oslo (Vippetangen) to one of the many islands in the Oslofjord.

History of Oslo

Oslo’s rich history is on display at the museums in town that you can discover from your holiday lettings in Norway. The Fram Museum tells the history of the Norweigian Polar explorers. The Kon-Tiki Museum has the raft that Thor Heyerdahl used to sail 4,300 miles of Pacific ocean, and the Viking Ship Museum has Viking ships. Visit Akershus Fortress a historical museum, and Norsk Folkemuseum is the about cultural history. Gamlebyen (the old town) has the remains of medieval Oslo. If the history of Norway is of less interest to the little ones, in summer, TusenFryd Amusement Park will thrill the family with rides and a water park, and the Royal Palace is open for tours.
