Politics of the region
South Tyrol is the northernmost province of Italy and, together with the province of Trento, the region with the special statute of Trentino-Alto Adige. This region is divided into these two autonomous, self-governing provinces of Trentino and South Tyrol. This hard fought battle for independent rights won exclusivity in 1972. Sixty per cent of the population is German-speaking in South Tyrol and four per cent are to be found mainly in the Val Badia. Val Senales became world famous thanks to a sudden archaeological sensational discovery in 1991. In between the mountain passes of Tisenjoch above the Val Senales glacier, the mummy Ötzi was found. The archaeological museum with an outdoor area offers a clear insight into the lifestyle of the Neolithic people that were located in Val Senales in the Oetztal Alps about 5300 years ago. The famous Ötzi, whose remains likely date back to somewhere between 3359-3105 BC, is shown in the Archaeology Museum in Bolzano.

Arriving at the Schnalstal is truly spectacular; it comes uphill in a beautiful landscape. At the beginning of the valley above the Naturns Juval is a medieval castle first documented in 1278. The mountaineer Reinhold Messner first discovered in the castle in 1983, beginning the process of renovating the building as residence and museum. The exhibition is dedicated to the Magic Mountain and is part of the six-part project Messner Mountain Museum.
