Ålesund is probably the most beautiful town in Norway. In 1904, a fire destroyed most of the town. More than 800 houses were ruined, and approx. 12,000 people lost their homes. The town has been rebuilt and is now noted for its unique concentration of Jugendstil architecture. If you go on a walk through town, you can admire the facades, spires and ornaments. Ålesund is a sea port and is surrounded by several islands and mountains. Atlanterhavsparken is one of the largest saltwater-aquariums in northern Europe. It is an architectural gem, integrated into the coastal nature between ocean and land. The fish market in Ålesund is also worth seeing. Aksla is one of the several islands that Ålesund is founded on. While you can drive almost to the top, Aksla is a popular recreation area, and you will find a myriad of paths and trails up there. One of the most popular routes runs from the city and up to Fjellstua via 418 steps. From the middle of April to the middle of September, Hurtigruten arranges one day cruises through Storfjord, Synnylvsfjord, Geraingerfjord and Gerainger.
