The region has many monuments from the Roman, Romanesque and Gothic periods, as well as several historic towns and fortifications, churches and palaces – some of which have earned a place on the UNESCO World Heritage List. One of the lesser-known World Heritage sites is the picturesque town of Briançon, which is one of the highest towns in the world. A mountain drive will reward you with a town with impressive fortifications and charming narrow streets. The town is one of 12 Fortifications of Vauban which are dotted across France from Normandy to Aquitaine.

Food and drink in Provence reflects the warm climate and often arid landscape which is covered in olive groves and vineyards. Olive oil is grown in abundance here, and is used in almost all major dishes from fried sardines to comforting ratatouille – which originated in the city of Nice. The wine here is also fantastic, with famous vineyards producing the most delicious rosés in all of France. Make sure to try traditional French cuisine in family-run restaurants across the region, or, pick up some fresh ingredients from one of the many local markets and cook a delicious meal in the comfort of your Provence villa.
