The Lascaux Cave is one of the world's most important archaeological sites from prehistoric times and definitely worth a visit from holiday homes in France. In 1979, the cave was awarded the status of World Heritage Site by UNESCO. From 1949 to 1963, the cave itself was made accessible to the public, however this was put on hold due to damage. Don’t be disheartened, however, if you are staying in one of our French gites nearby, you can still take a tour of the reproduction of the Lascaux cave where you can learn how the cave was discovered, what exactly was found and get an amazing glimpse into history right on your doorstep.
Many of our holiday homes in Aquitaine are close to famous lakes, rivers and the thick forests of Perigord Vert. France is a wonderful place to celebrate with a multitude of events, festivals, holidays and celebrations of every kind. Be sure to look up local festivities while browsing French holiday homes and try to align your family getaway. For example, you might like to stay in one of our holiday lettings on the national holiday, ‘Bastille Day’ on July 14th, where you can take part in parades, see performances and watch fireworks light up the sky. In Aquitaine, there are not just the national celebrations, but many smaller fairs happening all-year-round. At the end of June, for example, the famous Bordeaux Wine Festival takes place, which is a great place to sample the region grapes. In Biarritz, you should stay alert for street festivals in the summer, when the region comes alive with music.
Lovers of seafood come from far and wide – even from Corsica villas – to witness the Fete de la Mer et de la Huitre, where the fishing villages around the Bassin Arcacho celebrate the sea and the lovely shellfish it provides. Whilst you rent French villas, we also recommend the Fêtes de Bayonne at the end of July. These celebrations are lively with singing, dancing, music and fireworks. You may even chance upon a local cattle race. Whenever you visit, Aquitaine is a marvellous region with a lot to offer – whether you are seeking a beach holiday with the family, an active break or a relaxing countryside escape in the depths of Aquitaine’s forests and vineyards.
