Along the border with Portugal in the south as well as Asturias and Castilla-Leon in the east, Galicia also has the sea as its neighbour. About half of Galician's borders consist of a coastline along the Atlantic Ocean, which provides ideal conditions enjoying the ocean during your stay in our villas in Spain in Galicia. Along the coast you will find so-called rías, which may be best described as coves. These creeks are very rich in fish, which has made the region a prominent producer in the fishing industry. The region's rias are divided into Rías Altas and Rías Baixas.
Galicia is one of Spain's autonomous regions and consists of the four provinces of Lugo, Ourense, Pontevedra and A Coruña. Ourense carries on a rich history with the same name as the province of Romans founded. That the region has a long and rich history is reflected in many of the places here, making it a lovely destination for anyone interested in Spanish history. In the city of Santiago de Compostela, which is also the capital of Galicia, it is said that the grave of the apostle Jacob is located.
One of the most popular historical attractions is the beautiful cathedral of Santiago de Compostela from the year 1075. In the city is also the church of Igrexa de Santa Maria a Real do Sar and the Cicade da Cultura de Galicia construction - both popular destinations of Santiago de Compostela. In Vigo, the largest city in Galicia, you can visit a variety of museums and wander around the city's historic centre or take a trip to some of the popular beaches; there are so many things to do in Spain, and Galicia is no exception. If you are interested in football, you can see the city of la Celta Vigo play a game. Nature's sights in Galicia consist of beautiful rias and cliffs, but also of green and Atlantic forests. There are several natural areas, but also mountains such as Trevinca.
If you are traveling through the city of Lugo you can wander on the world-famous Roman walls, a round trip of about two kilometres. The wall is 15 meters high, and was built to protect the city against invasions, which on several occasions failed. Despite the weaknesses of the wall, this is a great way to be active while learning more about the history of the city during your stay in your chosen NOVASOL self-catering holiday homes in Galicia. South of Fisterra is Cabo Fisterra, an approximately 3.5 kilometer long route with incredibly beautiful views. On the road you can see Igrexa de Santa Maria, and it is also possible to choose longer routes.
Like the rest of Spain, Galicia offers a wonderful selection when it comes to gastronomic experiences. One of the major advantages of renting villas and apartments in Spain is that you can choose how you want to experience the local Spanish cuisine. You will be able to experience something new each day if you wish to, no more bland meals that feel the same every day! Instead, you can choose to visit the local restaurants one day and cook local produce from the local grocery store in your holiday home the next day. Enjoy your Spanish masterpiece on the terrace or balcony, with a glass of Spanish wine of course!
Given the location it is no wonder that the kitchen here is characterized by a lot of fish and shellfish. There are so many different dishes that we would suggest sampling during your stay in your chosen holiday lettings in Spain in the Galicia area. Among our favourites are the empanadas of fish and meat, as well as caldo galego, a tasty soup. Be sure to taste boiled squid, or ‘centolla’. Oysters and mussels are also common and frequently served in restaurants here.
