Discover Aquitaine’s history with French holiday cottages

The Lascaux Cave is one of the world's most important archaeological sites from prehistoric times and definitely worth a visit from holiday homes in France. In 1979, the cave was awarded the status of World Heritage Site by UNESCO. From 1949 to 1963, the cave itself was made accessible to the public, however this was put on hold due to damage. Don’t be disheartened, however, if you are staying in one of our French gites nearby, you can still take a tour of the reproduction of the Lascaux cave where you can learn how the cave was discovered, what exactly was found and get an amazing glimpse into history right on your doorstep.

Self-catering in France – sample fantastic cuisine

Many of our holiday lettings in Aquitaine are close to famous lakes, rivers and the thick forests of Perigord Vert. With a stroke of luck, you may be able to find a rare mushroom, or even a coveted truffle used to garnish tasty dishes such as confit goose. On a day trip from villas in neighbouring regions such as Midi-Pyrénées, you may also like to try Aquitaine’s local specialties of foie gras, duck breast macaroons and various freshly prepared shellfish dishes. Holidaymakers interested in visiting the famous vineyards that produce the world’s best wines can take a tour through the village of Saint-Emilion. Perhaps buy a bottle to enjoy back at your French villa with a piece of Brebious, Montagnac or Cabécou cheese.

Festivals and celebrations

France is a wonderful place to celebrate with a multitude of events, festivals, holidays and celebrations of every kind. Be sure to look up local festivities while browsing French holiday homes and try to align your family getaway. For example, you might like to stay in one of our holiday lettings on the national holiday, ‘Bastille Day’ on July 14th, where you can take part in parades, see performances and watch fireworks light up the sky. In Aquitaine, there are not just the national celebrations, but many smaller fairs happening all-year-round. At the end of June, for example, the famous Bordeaux Wine Festival takes place, which is a great place to sample the region grapes. In Biarritz, you should stay alert for street festivals in the summer, when the region comes alive with music.
