One of the lesser known World Heritage sites in the region is the picturesque town of Briançon, which is one of the highest towns in the world. A mountain drive will be necessary to reach Briançon from gites in Provence, with your reward being a cute town with impressive fortifications and charming narrow streets. The town is one of 12 Fortifications of Vauban which are dotted across France from Normandy to Aquitaine.

The Vaucluse region, in north-western Provence, offers plenty of variety from the famous mountain of Mont Ventoux to the historic city of Avignon. From French villas, visit some of France's most beautiful villages in the Luberon Regional Nature Park, and discover the area of Drome-Provence, where the landscape is synonymous with fragrant lavender fields. In this area you can also visit the exciting city of Avignon with its Gothic buildings, delicious restaurants, atmospheric cafes and theatres.
