Whilst staying in North Dalmatia in Croatia, you have the ability to explore the unique ecosystem that presents itself in Kornati National Park, just off the coast between Zadar and Sibenik. Enjoy your Croatia self-catering holidays in one of these locations and take a relaxing tour boat excursion to the park. You may even see bottlenose dolphins or lovely sea turtles from the boat. With an area of 320 square kilometres of refreshing azure waters, fascinating vegetation, stunning beaches and independent islands flung like a string of pearls into the sea, you will not be disappointed. Ticket prices also go towards local conservation efforts.
This archipelago of 89 islands and islets northwest of the island Žirje was declared in 1980, along with the water a National Park. It is named after the largest island of the archipelago of Kornati in Croatia, which has, like the other islands boast a barren, moon-like landscape. There used to be forests, but they have been cleared in the past by shepherds for new pastures. The islands are formed of limestone and as for development, there is relatively little: a few churches, Illyrian excavations, grave mounds and the ruined fortress Turet on Kornat. So it is impossible to stay here, but you can book holiday rentals in Croatia in nearby areas.
The islands, with their fantastically diverse underwater world, are an absolute paradise for divers. Due to their protection, this has allowed marine life to thrive, but please note that guests need consent to dive here. There are officially authorised diving centres in the area that can guide you to the correct areas and ensure proper protection of the marine ecosystem. If you are not certified, don’t worry – swimming and snorkelling here is incredible as well! In Kornati alone there are 850 marine animal species including 61 types of crabs and 185 types of fish. So make the most of your Croatia self-catering holidays and don’t forget your swimsuit!
The favoured landmarks of the islands are called the ‘crowns’, which are the seaward cliffs that jut high and fall deep into the sea. The crown of the island Mana is 1350 metres high, whilst the longest drop off the crown of the island Klobučar is 82 metres. The gorgeous island world of Croatia with beautiful bays is not only popular with sailors, divers and swimmers, but also for nature lovers and hikers renting villas in Croatia. This National Park will also present you with wonderful photo opportunities and some unbelievable views. Keep your eyes peeled for the rare monk seals on your walk!
