Discover magnificent landscapes from your villas
From a scenic point of view, the differences from the lively city of Salzburg with its hilly surroundings extend over the lakes of the Salzkammergut to the mighty peaks of the mountain chains of the Tennengebirge, the Kalkalpen and the Großglockner. Salzburg also has a share in the national park, Hohe Tauern. The lush alpine pastures, clear mountain streams, quiet valleys and the sighting of a marmot or capricorn make a holiday in the five regions of Salzburg quite the experience. These magnificent surroundings, of course make Salzburg a fantasic location for those who enjoy outdoor adventure holidays, or simply relaxing with the ultimate view. Encounter cities and countryside in Europe
With Salzburg being such a varied region of Austria, there are several gems to stumble across on your travels to this rich and diverse country. From cosmopolitan hubs to charming villages and wide open natural spaces where there is nobody else in sight, Salzburg will amaze you. Salzburg city itself has much to offer, for example the fortress Hohensalzburg, Mirabell Palace, Mozart's birthplace and the Felsenreitschule are among the sights of the city of Salzburg. But we would also recommend visiting the cities of Hallein, Saalfelden, Bischofshofen, St. Johann or Zell am See, which are well worth a visit from your holiday homes in Austria.
Austrian cuisine awaits in Salzburg
Discover the delights of the Austrian kitchen from your holiday rentals in Austria, either by visiting the wealth of resturants on offer, or by serving up a feat yourself in the privacy of your own holiday home. Those with a sweet tooth must try the Salzburger Nockerln in particular - a sweet soufflé from an egg-sugar-flour mixture, whipped into peaks. Or perhaps get your hands on some Salzburg Mozart balls, which consist of a chocolate ball, hazelnut nougat and white and green pistachio marzipan. The original Mozart ball was created in 1890 by the confectioner Paul Fürst and you can find them almost everywhere now regardless of where you stay on your self-catering holiday in Austria.
Activities and attractions in Salzburg - Lichtenstein Gorge
On your travels in Austria, why not disocver a legendary gorge right in the middle of Salzburg. The gorge leaves a huge impression through the depth and narrowness of this natural wonder with an almost ghostly light and shadow play creating an eerie and enchanting atmosphere. Visitors have always been fascinated - and you will be too! The roaring waterfalls and the tearing water masses have cut themselves ever deeper into the ravine for thousands of years and the rocks now stand so narrow and high that the sky can only be seen as a small strip. The Lichtenstein Gorge is not only one of the most beautiful, but also one of the deepest gorges of the Alps. Make this a must on your list of things to do in Austria.
Hellbrunn Palace and Salzburg Zoo
The Hellbrunn Palace with its park and the connected Salzburg Zoo is only a few minutes south of the city of Salzburg if you get the chance to pay a visit whilst self-catering in Austria. A tour of the Salzburg Zoo takes you past beautifully designed enclosures, where the animals feel at home. Afterwards you can visit the well-renowned water features of Hellbrunn Palace, built in by the Salzburg prince-bishop Markus Sittikus. From the beginning, the water features were the defining element of the castle. The numerous springs of the Hellbrunner mountain lend the mighty estate bubbling life. Hidden in the green shade of bushes and trees or alive splashing from unimagined hiding places - for almost 400 years the fountains have been the world-famous centerpiece of the Hellbrunner amusements.
