The Canaries Climate - villas in Canary Islands

The Canary Islands are well known for having one of the best climates in the world, they have a sub-tropical climate with an average temperature of 22 degrees Celsius and no extreme cold or hot temperatures. So a holiday in one of our villas in the Canary Islands is the perfect destination at any time of the year. Visiting the Canary Islands has long been popular and even the Ancient Greeks appreciated the healthy climate, fresh sea air and natural surroundings.

The fantastic climate in these islands is due to their location just off the southern coast of Morocco, which means that they are situated just above the temperate inversion layer. Combined with the trade winds, this prevents clouds from forming and consequently summers and winters are rain free and there are on average only three rainy days per month.

Different Canary Island’s Climates

Even within the Canaries there are various micro-climates, depending on their position, which can mean that they are mild and wet or very dry. Fuerteventura and Lanzarote are the closest islands to Africa and are less influenced by the trade winds, which means they have more of a hot and dry climate.

In Tenerife, the north of the island is under the influence of the Atlantic and is therefore well vegetated whereas the south of the island is arid. The island has a mountain that reaches peaks of 4,000 metres, so this area is cooler and relatively wet. The islands of El Hierro, La Palma and La Gomera, which lies to the west of the archipelago, have climates which are influenced by the moist gulf stream and tend to be more vegetated, even at lower level altitudes.
