Parenzana Cycle Track
Croatia holiday homes for an active holiday
The Istrian peninsula is divided into seven regions: Umag-Novigrad, Porec, Vrsar-Funtana, Rovinj, Pula-Medulin, Labin-Rabac and the interior. Book a Croatia holiday letting in any one of these regions in Istria, and you can discover the many faces of this island. Most of these holiday regions are by the sea and the name Istria brings to mind sun, beaches and crystal clear waters, but Istria is also ideal for active holidays! Istria can be easily be explored by bike – for example it is just 90 kilometres between Umag in the north and Medulin in the south.
Croatia cottage holidays along the Parenzana cycle track
A particularly exciting bike trail is the multinational bicycle trail, the ‘path of health and friendship’ called Parenzana. If you are a cycling, sports or fitness enthusiast, rent an apartment in the north of Istria or any Croatia holiday homes nearby and cycle the 116 km long road leading from Trieste in Italy via Slovenia to Croatia. This wonderful hiking and biking trail has been created for the most part on the route of a former railway. The legendary local railway ran from 1902 to 1935 from Trieste to Poreč (Parenzo).
Parenzana landmarks - Croatia holiday lettings
The mostly preserved station buildings on this route are wonderful to look at and great milestones on your journey from your Croatia holiday homes. Tunnels and viaducts also remain along the trail, beautifully offset by the large stretches of scenery along the way. If you are planning a longer trip, it is also worth it to stop by the fascinating and charming mountain villages along the way. The route between Buje and Vižinada is spectacular, for example, leading through the mountain villages of Triban, Grožnjan Kostanjica, Završje, Oprtalje, Livade, Motovun, Karojba and Rakotule.
Something for all abilities
Don’t be put off by the thought of active Croatia cottage holidays if you are an inexperienced cyclist, as there is part of the route suited to each ability. On the Vižinada- Poreč section, it is very flat. However, from the border of Sečovlje up in the mountain village of Vižinada, the bike path is a well-marked, but significantly more adventurous path with gravel sections. This section is best travelled with a mountain bike. Enjoy the beauty of the magnificent landscape on your ride, regardless of which path you choose from your villas in Croatia.
