Situated in a bay on the western part of the island of Vis, lies Komiža. Exploring the 90 km2 island, and Komiža in particular, can be easily done whilst sampling our wide range of Croatia accommodation. The island can be easily reached via the car-ferry from Split. You will find that the entire island is hilly; in fact, Komiža lies at the foot of the 587 metre high mountain Hum. This makes it a fantastic spot for hiking or cycling holidays and the views from the top of the mountain are spectacular.
Whether you choose to sample one of our Villas Croatia or opt for a homely apartment, culture vultures will enjoy the range of fascinating buildings and history. For example, the island of Vis is home to the first Greek colony founded in the eastern Adriatic. The Romans later built thermal baths, temples, theatres and a forum. Whether its Greek or Roman civilisation that interests you, these can be easily enjoyed whilst staying in NOVASOL’s Croatia accommodation. For fans of this fascinating culture, and fabulous array of buildings, our Zadar apartments also offer a fantastic alternative.
Steeped in history, the settlement Komiža was first documented in the 12th century and the citadel, located in the port, dates back to 1585. Although the island’s owners often changed throughout history, from 1815-1918 it was under the ownership of the Habsburgs. They quickly established a base for the navy and Komiža witnessed some fierce battles. Whilst part of Yugoslavia, a military airport was built in 1944 and until 1989, Vis was considered a ‘forbidden island’. Nowadays, as you will find whilst enjoying a self-catering Croatia holiday, the residents live off viticulture, fishing and increasingly tourism.
Sample the fruits of their labour, and explore the wonderful wide bay beaches whilst staying in one of our villas Croatia. Whether you’re looking for a beach holiday, a spot of culture or perhaps a forest holiday amidst this stunning scenery, the choices are endless. In the centre of Komiža town is the beautiful church of St Nicholas, which presents a fantastic photo opportunity. St Nicholas is the patron saint of sailors. Every year on December 6th an old boat is burned in front of the Church of Komiža as an offering to St Nicholas.
