Situated in a bay on the western part of the island of Vis, lies Komiža. History and activity in Vis and Komiža
Steeped in history, the settlement Komiža was first documented in the 12th century and the citadel, located in the port, dates back to 1585. Although the island’s owners often changed throughout history, from 1815-1918 it was under the ownership of the Habsburgs. They quickly established a base for the navy and Komiža witnessed some fierce battles. Whilst part of Yugoslavia, a military airport was built in 1944 and until 1989, Vis was considered a ‘forbidden island’. Nowadays, as you will find whilst enjoying a self-catering Croatia holiday, the residents live off viticulture, fishing and increasingly tourism.
