Gebel Musa - Where Moses received the Ten Commandments

The 2,285 m high Gebel Muse, perhaps better known as Mount Sinai, is not only considered sacred by the Christians, but also in Islam and Judaism. According to the Bible, at the summit, God gave Moses the Ten Commandments.


You can either ascend via the path 'Sikket el Basha', the Camel Trail or the Moses Trail, Sikket Saydna Musa'. Interestingly, the Moses Steps, which consist of over 3,700 granite steps, were designed by a monk to fulfill a vow.
There are also night tours offered, so that one experiences the sunrise on the summit. These are best organised locally.

St Catherine's Monastery - the island in Sinai

The monastery was founded between 548 and 565 and enjoys autonomy in the Sinai desert. It is a Greek Orthodox monastery in the midst of a traditional Islamic area, more precisely, it is the oldest Christian monastery still in use today. St. Catherine's Monastery is under special patronage under the sponsorship of Napoleon Bonaparte, which has contributed to its preservation until today. Even today, copies of the letter of protection decorate the walls of the monastery.
