The town is located at the foot of the Velebit mountain range. The mountains form an air barrier between the mountainous climate of central Croatia and the Mediterranean climate of the Adriatic. The close proximity of the mountains and the sea ensure that an exceptionally varied range of activities are on offer, which ensures that the area is perfect for active family holidays. The 1,700m high cliffs in the mountains are considered one of the best climbing areas in Europe and attract many daredevils who are drawn to the free-climbing opportunities.
Alternatively, Vganski Vrh – which is the highest mountain in the area, at 1,758 metres high – is home to a fantastic hiking trail, which is hugely popular with guests staying in one of our villas in Croatia. The summit trail is 50km long and travels through the central and northern part of the mountain. The area is particularly suited for guests in our dog friendly cottages as there are a total of 150 marked trails available, as well as 400 climbing routes, all waiting to be discovered!

The area attracts visitors from near and far – whether that be visitors from Starigrad or alternatively guests in our Dubrovnik accommodation. The area is home to two national parks. The 96km² Paklenica park– translated as Little Hell – is abundant in flora and fauna. Here you will discover the breath-taking canyons of Velika and Mala Paklenica, which can be explored on foot or by bike.
