Holiday accommodation in Tirana, Albania

Holiday villa rentals in Albania

Have you considered a holiday in Albania? The country is still a lesser known travel destination, but here there are many great experiences waiting for those of you who would like to explore a little more unknown Europe. A good place to start your exploration of the capital would of course be the capital city of Tirana.

Tirana is the capital of Albania, a city that is often forgotten when we choose which capital we want to visit for our next city break. But do not cheat yourself for this experience. NOVASOL is renting holiday homes close to Tirana. It is no secret that Albania would like to leave the communist past behind, but the unique Albanian history past is what makes the city an interesting European travel destination. Although the country is known to the Northern Europeans as one of Europe's poorest countries, you will quickly notice the ever-increasing globalization of the Albanian capital, seen in large numbers of Mercedes and a more Western European dress.

Ferie i Albanien

Experience Tirana in one day

Should you decide to spend some time in bustling Tirana during your stay in one of our range of self-catering accommodation in Albania, it is highly recommended to start at the large space Sheshi Skenderbej, located in the heart of Tirana. In the middle of the big room is a statue of the Albanian Skanderbeg, as the place is named after. Turning your head to the left, you will stand for the foot of Tirana's oldest mosque Et`hem Bey. Here you must take off your shoes before entering the monumental rooms decorated with the most beautiful architecture and pretty decorations. Next to the mosque is a bell tower from 1820, from which you have a view over the Sheshi Skenderbej square.

One of a kind holiday experiences in Albania
It is rare that so many interesting sights are so close to each other. Discover the popular shopping street, then the newly renovated pedestrian street Rruga Murat Toptani is followed by beautiful restaurants and cafés on either side where you can try some traditional Albanian cuisine. At the end of the street is the major shopping center Toptani Shopping Center and the Albanian Parliament Building. After a little shopping, it is highly recommended to follow the street down to the river where you will find the preserved little walkway Ura e Tabakëve from the 19th century, hidden behind restaurants and buildings.

The Albanian history

History-interested or not, when renting a holiday home at Tirana, you will not regret visiting the historical museum Bunk Art, which opened in 2014. The museum is built in Albania's former dictators Enver Hoxha shelter. The bunker has 5 floors with 106 rooms, which today have been converted into a historical art museum. The museum contains knowledge about Albania's communist military and life under this regime. If you think this is interesting, continue your museum visits in Bunk'Art 2, which has reconstructed the history of the Albanian interior ministry from 1912 to 1991 and reveals the secrets of the then political police, Sigurimi. After a day in history, you move home to the holiday home and fill up the depots. If you would like to learn a little bit more about the Albanian history, visit the National Gallery Galeria Kombëtare e Arteve, which is said to be one of the most popular attractions in Tirana. The gallery's most sought after exhibition is Albanian social realism depicting poor Albanian society under the Communist regime, and the gallery also has changing exhibitions. The gallery is definitely worth a visit. When you still move near Sheshi Skenderbej, take a dirt past the Tirana Orthodox Cathedral. A strange building, which is difficult to describe with words but which is an interesting and magnificent building that is recommended to visit.

Time for a break

One of our favourite ways to spend an afternoon is wandering around a local market of fresh produce, and that's what you'll find on Tirana's largest market Pazari in Ri, located just off the major roundabout east of Sheshi Skenderbej. Here you will find Albanian specialties to take back for dinner at your Albania villas, as well as fresh fruit and vegetables, meat, cheese, olives and more. Why not pick up an afternoon snack, and head for the city's biggest park, Parku in Madh, where the residents of the capital are looking for a respite from the stress of the city. Take a walk in the park and sit on one of the benches with a picnic and observe the fishermen by the lake or the runners as they go past.
