The eastern part has sparse vegetation whereas the western part is predominantly green with the forested hills of the Kalifront Peninsular. In this part of the island, families enjoy outdoor activities such as biking and hiking along the wooded trails, many of which lead down to hidden beaches of impeccable beauty. The southern area of Kvarner is dominated by the majestic Velebit Mountains which form a huge chain combining the Northern Velebit and Paklenica national parks. Delicious scampi dishes are often served with the seafood unpeeled, so diners must suck out the white flesh amongst flavours of garlic and sometimes spices. Another local delight is Pag Cheese, made on the southern island of Pag, which is often served with olives as table nibbles before the starters arrive.
