A number of the historic towns and cities in Dalmatia are more than 2,000 years old. The biggest cities are Split, Zadar and Dubrovnik, which are located close to many of our villas in Croatia. Dalmatia’s architectural treasures are always worth a visit on self-catering holidays. The Romans, Carolingians, Byzantines, Venetians, Turks and Habsburgs have all left their mark in this part of the country, leaving behind wonderful sights and delicious dishes to enjoy. Rent Croatian villas or apartments in these charismatic cities, or visit on day-trips, before returning to holiday lettings in the afternoon for a refreshing afternoon dip in the sea or pool.
Families are spoilt by all the things to see and do in Northern Dalmatia. Croatia’s highest mountain, Dinara, which has a height of 1,830 metres, can be found in the region, and is well worth visiting for fantastic views and impressive landscapes. From Zadar – northern Dalmatia’s major port city – you can explore a vast array of islands and inlets just off the coast such as Pasman, where NOVASOL has a number of fantastic Croatian villas. You should also visit the historic city of Sibenik, which attracts many tourists with its beautiful Cathedral of St. Jakov, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Also, if you are looking to explore more of Croatia during your trip, holiday rentals in northern Dalmatia make a good base for visiting attractions in Kvarner Bay and even Istria.
Located in central Dalmatia, Split is one of the most beautiful cities in the Mediterranean. If you decide to stay in Split on Croatia villa holidays, don't miss out on the Riviera of Split, which is just 40 minutes away by car and offers stunning, quiet bays close to our Split apartments. The largest archaeological site on the east coast of the Adriatic can also be found here, where tourists discover intriguing ruins and forgotten landscapes. Off the coast of central Dalmatia, reachable by boat from Split harbour, are the wonderful islands of Brac and Hvar with their white pebble beaches and the crystal clear waters. NOVASOL offers a selection of luxurious Croatian villas in on these quiet islands, which are ideal for relaxing holidays away from the busy tourist centres.
Southern Dalmatia is an extremely varied region with bustling towns, tranquil islands and a warm climate. The Mediterranean vegetation and beautiful scenery in this southern region is closer to that of Greece than neighbouring Italy. While renting villas in Croatia here, the medieval Old Town of Dubrovnik, with its imposing ramparts and enchanting central streets, is a real highlight that should be at the top of your holiday itinerary. The Dubrovnik area offers many beautiful coastal resorts, and our Dubrovnik apartments are often right beside the sea. One of the most popular beach-towns of southern Dalmatia is Cavtat, but the island of Korcula is perhaps even more enticing for lovers of picturesque old towns and quiet coves.
In Dalmatia, it is very common to eat healthy food, such as grilled or steamed fish that is served with olive oil, vegetables and wild herbs. The portions are generally very generous, which is part of Dalmatian tradition and helps to give you plenty of energy for exploring the region's many attractions. Cold starters are quite popular here, as they are in Kvarner Bay further north, with favourites including smoked and wind dried so-called Prsut ham, as well as sheep’s cheese. To accompany your restaurant meal or your al fresco dining back at villas in Croatia, why not enjoy a glass of white wine, some mineral water or a tipple of spicy Travarica brandy?
The Adriatic Highway in Croatia is one of the most beautiful coastal roads in southern Europe, and if you decide to stay in one of our Dubrovnik of Split apartments, you will probably drive on this road to get there. As it is a very curvy, meandering road, many people enjoy driving on it by motorbike, which is a great alternative to a car. It is always worth renting a motorbike for a couple of days, should you have a motorcycle license. Pedal cyclists who are looking for a real challenge on Croatia villa holidays should consider a day trip along this gorgeous road, but be aware of the strong headwinds and the large altitude variation.
